Issue No.16 2014
THE SILK ROAD
For the last 40 years, mother of three, and grandmother of six, collector, artist Bernadette Smith has travelled each year along the rich and exotic pathway of the Silk road. The Silk road reaches from Central Asia, linking China in the each and to Iran and the Mediterranean to the west. Then north to Russia and south to India and Afghanistan. Now celebrating her 80th year of her life, she is travelling around Uzbekistan, the last city of the Silk road. Her home plays homage to her travels and houses her eclectic finds and handmade textiles that she found at markets years ago. Bernadette's artwork is inspired by her love of arts, crafts and textiles and her life in the Southern Highlands of NSW.
